THE STORY

A scene set along the Seine River in Paris, starts with the people who gather to celebrate, to ponder, to eat, to imbibe, and to laugh, but their eyes without fail find their gaze resting on the peaceful waterway as it glistens — witnessing the small boats that float on by and how it weaves with purpose through the godly, intricate spires of the city’s historic gothic architecture. It is a rare place where daily life and elevated beauty, history and the present can simply co-exist. On a dream trip, this fleeting moment made a lasting imprint and La Seine was born when she returned to New York City in 2019. Designer Sarah Thảo Nguyễn, was in awe of a simple river — a constant flow of energy that offered a place for us to connect with each other, and to become closer with the nature.

La Seine began as an intimate study in sculpture to capture and express the moments seen or felt in her life. It was a humble beginning involving metal-smithing brass atop a kitchen stove in a city apartment that managed to yield distinct forms both fluid and bold that would later inspire her first collection. Influenced by her Vietnamese heritage, she has come to cherish the gold heirlooms gifted by her mother from when she was a little girl. They are worn like a second skin and every time they catch the light, they are everlasting reminders of her strength, hope and love.

Intrigued by the intimate format of jewelry and effortless wear, she sees it as the perfect canvas to explore our relationship with objects now and in the future. Objects that become mementos reminding us of our inner beauty and the beauty that already surrounds us through the lens of traditional craftsmanship, modern design, and contemporary aesthetics.
